Chapter 12

The site has a dynamic role and is a source for building materials and is the energy for construction. It is linked interdependent systems combining essential resources because materials are available in nature.

Transportation was difficult and expensive before the industrialization era and construction materials so the construction materials came from the location around the building lot. The plot provided space for piling and stocking materials. Energy & fuel were limited and techniques were handed down through craft and tradition. The cost of materials was a greater component of economic value than the direct costs of building. This type of production conformed to the economic pattern of traditional societies. This way of dealing with construction is practiced until now and has not endured industrial modernization.
New technologies and materials were introduced such as steel and reinforced concrete. New materials were developed like plastics, adhesives and alloys. But the building site stayed as it is: a platform for construction. Mechanization & the unlimited access to fuel eliminated the “from site” abilities of extracting building materials. The invention of air conditioning systems affected the way of construction: you do not have to take into consideration the natural components. The technological advancement controlled the building environment and found solutions to issues faced in the past providing comfort and the fabric of enclosure structure; walls and roof were replaced by mechanical systems.
The high performance design is linked with sustainable architecture. Everything is taken into consideration from the life cycle of materials to limiting the environmental impact. The used of raw natural materials and renewable energy sources are used again and on the other hand energy savings were maximized & healthy interiors are provided.
